What a furnace cleaning actually involves

Power off at the switch. Gas valve closed. We pull the burner compartment door and the blower assembly. The squirrel cage comes out when the bolts allow it. Fins pack with gray felt, and that is where most airflow loss hides. Burner tubes get brushed and vacuumed. The flame sensor is scuffed clean, not replaced by habit. Then the inducer, the pressure switch tubing, and on condensing furnaces the condensate trap, which silts up here.

Then the inspection. Heat exchanger surfaces, flame pattern, rollout switches, vent connections. Attic furnaces in post-1985 tract homes are the hardest to reach and the most neglected. Platform decking blocks the door swing. Garage and closet units are easier, but their returns pull in exhaust and dust.

Cleaning the furnace does not fix what feeds it. A single undersized hallway return grille bypasses unfiltered air around the filter frame. A 1-inch filter left in six months past change collapses and lets everything through. Ash fines after wildfire season settle in supply boots downstream, so the furnace comes out clean and the house does not.

We will say plainly when a cleaning is cosmetic and the real problem is a cracked ductboard plenum or a disconnected takeoff.
